Local women celebrated at 11th annual foundation gala

From a soul singer to a judicial court judge to a community college president, 11 San Antonio women were honored at the 11th annual La Prensa Foundation Salute to "Outstanding Women in Action" gala Friday evening.
Since its inception in 1997, the foundation has distributed over $1.6 million in scholarships to area colleges and universities, including UTSA, Palo Alto, St. Mary's and the University of the Incarnate Word.
"The La Prensa Foundation was created to serve as a means to share our love and blessings with numerous students in the San Antonio area," founder Amelia Dur�n said. "We continually make our scholarship program available to first generation college students who have financial hardships."
Receiving the Business Award at this year's gala was Oralia Salame, owner of Tommy's Restaurant. Salame said the award felt like a culmination of all the hard work she has put into her restaurant business over the past 11 years.
"Never in a million years would I have though I would receive an award like this," Salame said. "I could feel it and was aware of all the hard work I have done, but I didn't realize that anyone else knew."
Tommy's Restaurant downtown off Nogalitos is this week's Blue Plate Winner.
 The restaurant didn't pick up a single demerit on its last health inspection.
"You have to respect food. Food is something that's very personal; it's not just a happening," Oralia Salame told us. "It has to be maintained. You really have to work hard to maintain what you do."
Oralia the owner was quick to credit her employees for keeping the restaurant so clean. And she was quick to show off her Blue Plate Award to customers.
